We are pleased to announce NATURA, our new spring exhibition which brings together two major genres in the history of art: the still life and the landscape. The exhibition features a selection of European works, dating from the 16th to the 20th century, which center on these themes.
Here, the mischievous monkey that animates the fruit-bedecked plinth in Van Kessel’s work on copper and the radiance of the gouache flowers painted by a 17th century Florentine artist can be seamlessly juxtaposed with landscapes that incite viewers to contemplate and reflect, such as Schweickhardt’s depiction of skaters gallivanting on the frozen Meuse River against a sky bathed in soft winter light. The tranquil solitude of the mountains, a favored theme of Joos de Momper, may also be apposed with Gaspard van Wittel’s landscape of ruins or Takanori Oguiss’ impression of Montmartre’s narrow streets from 1931.
